Wow what an incredible two weeks in my life. In order to launch this website I have been REALLY putting in long hours getting the first release of the functionality finished, connecting to PayPal and successfully incorporating it into the asp.net membership API, importing HUGE databases full of keywords and working with IronTech to get my dedicated server running IIS and PHP. So a couple of thousand dollars and hours later here we are. I can post a blog article to introduce AffPortal.com.
I need to thank my wife for hanging in with me coming to bed at midnight and my iTouch alarm getting me back up at 4 am. Also for all the hours she was left to the mercy of our two daughters.
So as I sit here importing a database that is 1.5 gb, containing 77 million english keywords I learned some lessons along the way. I’m no DBA. Sql Server Express has a 4.?? gb limit on the amout of data you can import. The 64 bit version of MySql can handle an import of 77million + records in one shot from a tab delimited text file. Converting the original Affiliate Portal from ASP.Net 2.0 to 3.5 took way longer than I had hoped but it was worth it after I realized how much more functionality there is in 3.5. The membership api in ASP.Net is way easy to use once you get a grasp on the database aspect of it.
Learning how to connect to and manipulate the guts of SqlServer Express was challenging but sooooo worth it. I am finally able to utilize a database for my websites that is more powerful than Microsoft Access. I literally feel like i’m wearing my “big boy” pants and it’s about time.
So now we are rocking a pretty bad ass setup. Asp.net 3.5 on an Windows 2008 dedicated server with IIS 7 and MS Sql Server Express 2008. Add in the latest PHP, MySQL and WordPress and I have a pretty sick setup that I can do just about anything with so watch out for some serious affiliate tools in the near future.
Dangle.
